Hall of Fame conditioner D. Wayne Lukas, who recently celebrated his 80th birthday, is continuing to improve according to his assistant Sebastian Nicholl. Lukas was hospitalized due to a low heart rate while in Philadelphia Sept. 19, where his pupils Mr. Z and Take Charge Brandi were running in the GII Pennsylvania Derby and GI Cotillion S., respectively.
“He's doing well right now, hopefully they release him soon,” Nicholls said. “I spoke to him a few times this week and he seems to be doing better. He'd like to try and drive back here on Saturday. They're going to try and leave there on Saturday morning, that's what he hopes for but that's not guaranteed.”
Nicholl believes The Coach, who is known for being out on the track on his pony early each morning, will be back at his post shortly after his return to Kentucky.
“We'll see how he feels,” Nicholls said. “I'm sure he's going to want to take it easy for a few days but I can expect he'll be back soon enough.”
