Tuttipaesi Gets Through Late in Santa Ana

Tuttipaesi came seemingly out of nowhere in the final strides to score her first graded victory in the Santa Ana. Cross-entered in the New Orleans Ladies S. at Fair Grounds, she was installed as the second-choice while breaking from the outside post in this short field of five. Breaking slowly, the gray was quickly settled into stride by Chris DeCarlo and ran alongside Nashoba's Gold (Smart Strike) at the back of the pack through an opening quarter in :24.50 and a half in :48.51. Three-wide on the outside of the tightly-bunched quintet on the backstretch, the 6-year-old was taken inside of longshot Fresh Feline approaching the turn and forced to check a bit off the heels of leaders Glory and favored Her Emmynency (Successful Appeal). Screaming for room while blocked in behind those runners as Glory attempted to go on with it in the lane, Tuttipaesi eagerly surged through a small seam in the final sixteenth to score. Glory held second over Fresh Feline and Nashoba's Gold ran on for fourth over a fast fading Her Emmynency. It was the second graded win of the day for Hall of Famer Bill Mott, who captured the Fair Grounds's GII Mervin Muniz Memorial H. with Take the Stand (Arg) (Not For Sale {Arg}). He also won Gulfstream's Sanibell Island H. with GSW Harmonize (Scat Daddy).

“[Chris DeCarlo] did a good job,” said Riley Mott, son and assistant to the winning conditioner. “She was in tight turning for home but was pretty valiant. I wasn't sure [she would get there] until 100 yards from the line, when she got out. I know she's game. She showed it in her previous races. This was a pretty special win.”

Starting her career in Europe for trainer Marco Botti, Tuttipaesi made her first three starts in America for conditioner Graham Motion before being transferred to Mott in the fall of 2014. Off the board in her first three outings for this barn, the gray finished second to Recepta (Speightstown) in Saratoga's De La Rose S. last August and faded to ninth behind that rival next out in Belmont's GIII Noble Damsel S. Sept. 19. Victorious next out in the restricted Suffolk Downs Distaff Turf S. Oct. 3, she followed suit with a win in Gulfstream's South Beach S. Dec. 12 and was a wide-trip third last time in that venue's GIII Marshua's River S. Jan. 9.
