Winx In A League Of Her Own

Winx powers clear in the Warwick S. | Racing And Sports

There was no doubting the superiority of champion racemare Winx (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}) as she made an ultra-smooth seasonal reappearance in the G2 Warwick S. at Randwick on Saturday. Settled in second by Hugh Bowman the 5-year-old had a lovely trip, looming alongside Rebel Dane (Aus) (California Dane {Aus}) early in the stretch before easing clear under minimal handling to account for the staying on Hartnell (GB) (Authorized {Ire}) by an effortless four lengths with the early leader Rebel Dane hanging on for third. Hugh Bowman couldn't hide his admiration for the mare as he told Racing And Sports. “It's hard not to get carried away with this mare, she really is something special. It's just an honour to be on her back. She felt fresh and well, although she has been well furnished for a first up run she put herself there and relaxed beautifully. Rebel Dane couldn't take me far enough.” Bowman added, “I don't think she's been as quick under me as she was today when I let her go. I'm starting to get used to her and getting to know her more and more each time. When she let down, it was a special feeling and I'm looking forward to feeling it again.”
Bowman won't have to wait too long for the privilege as Winx is being targeted at the G2 Chelmsford S. over 1600m back at Randwick in two weeks time. Confirming her plan of action trainer Chris Waller said, “I'm pleased we chose Sydney to resume, that's her home and there are a few more runs to come in Sydney before she takes on Melbourne.” Reflecting on her comeback display Waller added, “You never really know where horses are the way I train, that's just our system and we take them along quietly and just gradually build up. Her track work has been great, trials have been adequate and she has been brilliant the last week or so.” Winx races for Peter Tighe's Magic Bloodstock Syndicate in partnership with Richard Treweeke and Debbie Kepitis. “There's always worries,” a delighted Kepitis said. “But she just towed Hughie in. She knew what she wanted to do. She's just the best.” Fellow part owner Peter Tighe added,
“She was always in second gear, we're just so happy to have her back. Things are looking great for the future.” The Warwick was her tenth win in succession and Winx is clearly developing a cult following not dissimilar to Black Caviar (Aus) (Bel Esprit {Aus}) a few years ago.
