Sent off the distant $9 (8-1) third choice in Saturday's G2 Roman Consul S. at Randwick, Russian Revolution (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}) won the start from his outside draw and made all the running to remain undefeated in four career starts.
Able to establish a fairly soft lead beneath Kerrin McEvoy, Russian Revolution accelerated off the home turn and got first run on last year's G1 Golden Slipper hero and TDN Rising Star Capitalist (Aus) (Written Tycoon {Aus}), who enjoyed the run of the race from third. Clearly holding that $3.50 (5-2) second choice into the final furlong, Russian Revolution began reaching for the wire in the final 40 metres and got there first as $1.40 (2-5) favorite Astern (Aus) (Medaglia d'Oro) rallied smartly from last in the field of six (video).
“He's an underrated horse probably, but the only reason people probably haven't given him the credit he deserves yet is because he wasn't exposed to the wider public until June, but he's pretty good,'' winning trainer Peter Snowden said. “He'll get his chance in the Coolmore [Stud S.] now. He deserves that,” he added, referring to the Group 1 test (1200m) at Flemington Oct. 29.
Bred in Queensland by John Stuart Investments, Russian Revolution was hammered down to China Horse Club and bloodstock agent Michael Wallace for A$320,000 from the consignment of Vinery Stud at the 2015 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale. Perfect in a pair of starts last term, the bay made it three on the hop with a popular last-out success in the G3 Vain S. at Caulfield Aug. 13.
