Bart All Heart In Orr Stakes

Black Heart Bart | Bronwen Healy

A top class renewal of the G1 Ladbrokes C F Orr S. at Caulfield brought together nine individual Group 1 winners and it was the 6-year-old gelding Black Heart Bart (Aus) (Blackfriars {Aus}) who emerged victorious and in so doing, registered his fourth success at the highest level. Jockey Brad Rawiller kept things simple on the Darren Weir-trained winner settling mid-division out wide following a less than favourable draw. That draw ultimately proved no impediment to Black Heart Bart as he charted his course around the pack to get himself into a challenging position as the field approached the home turn. At that point Turn Me Loose (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}), who had been at the head of affairs for most of the trip, still held sway, though stalked by Malaguerra (Aus) (Magnus {Aus}), as Rawiller began to stoke the winner up for his effort.

Malaguerra, conqueror of Black Heart Bart on his previous outing, faded tamely as the winner hit top gear and he got to the front 100m from home and quickly put a length between himself and the game runner up Turn Me Loose. It was tight for third as Ecuador (NZ) (High Chaparral {Ire}) snatched the minor honour from the dead-heating pair of Palentino (Aus) (Teofilo {Ire}) and Jameka (Aus) (Myboycharlie {Ire}). “You've got no idea how much I love this horse,” Rawiller said upon pulling up. “The 1400m in Caulfield, he's made it his own, that's for sure. He was always going to be better for that first up run in Moonee Valley. Its fantastic when you've got a Group 1 horse likes this. Even if you're drawn bad, he's a horse that just tells me what to do.” He continued, “Darren [Weir] has been fantastic for me and to so many others. He's such a great trainer.”

Black Heart Bart seems to be improving with age. He took 14 runs to break his maiden Group 1 when claiming the G1 Darley Goodwood at Morphettville last May as a 5-year-old. Since then he has been a model of consistency only once finishing worse than second when down the field on his final outing last season in the G1 William Hill Cox Plate. He looks set for another profitable campaign. His trainer Darren Weir has made giant strides in his career in recent seasons and Saturday's win makes him the leading trainer of Group 1 winners this season. “What a horse to have in your stable. He's a beauty isn't he,” Weir told Racing.com. “I'm just so glad the owners chose us to train him. He's bombproof, he's a great racehorse and he got a great ride from Brad today. The only thing that concerned us today was the draw but Brad overcame that, getting into the three-wide line which is perfect for him.”

Pedigree Notes…

Black Heart Bart is one of three winners out of the ill-fated Sister Theresa (Aus) who died in 2012. She won six times in her own racing career before producing nine foals, five who have raced with Black Heart Bart her outstanding performer. His half-sister Rebel Sister (Aus) (Falbrav {Ire}) is a smart producer having foaled a pair of stakes winners in Rebel Son (Aus) (Snippetson {Aus}) and Rebel King (Aus) (Universal Ruler {Aus}). The pedigree also features Group 1 winner Savannah Success (Aus) (Success Express {Aus}) a half-sister to Sister Theresa and who is the dam of MG1SW and successful stallion Savabeel (Aus) (Zabeel {NZ}).Click for the free Equineline.com catalogue-style pedigree.
