Angela Renee Goes West to Win
Angela Renee, a debut winner at Belmont in June, was second behind Cavorting (Bernardini) in the Aug. 10 GII Adirondack S. and shipped west off a well-beaten third-place effort behind Condo Commando (Tiz Wonderful) over a sloppy Saratoga track in the Aug. 31 GI Spinaway S.
Trying two turns for the first time, the bay filly broke alertly and was in a three-way battle into the first turn. She was taken in hand down the backstretch and took up a stalking position while racing along the rail. Inching closer after a half in :46.97, Angela Renee bullied her way out from the rail and into contention into the stretch and strode clear to earn an automatic berth in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. Favored Conquest Eclipse rallied strongly at midstretch, but couldn’t catch the winner.
“I didn’t give Rafael [Bejarano] any instructions,” said Mike McCarthy, assistant to winning trainer Todd Pletcher. “I talked with Todd, he said the filly was very straightforward, don’t take anything away from her that comes easy. That was basically it. Todd’s a man of few words. We’ll see how she comes out of the race and go from there.”
Bejarano added, “I knew Conquest Eclipse was going to be tough to beat and I knew that Sunday Sonnet was going to be the speed. I got us right into the race and when I saw Sunday Sonnet (Any Given Saturday) go to the lead, I just tried to stay right behind. They showed us the trip. When we got to the stretch, I made sure we were clear and I knew Conquest Eclipse was coming so we got the jump on her and we won.” Bejarano was already looking ahead to the championship event. “I would love to be on her in the Breeders’ Cup,” he said. “I knew she didn’t give me everything today and I’m pretty sure she was saving it for next time.”
Mark Casse, trainer of Conquest Eclipse, wasn’t discouraged by the beaten favorite’s effort.
“She learned a lot today,” Casse said. “She had nowhere to go there for a while and it’s a learning experience. This sets her up well for the Juvenile Fillies.”
Out of Pilfer, Angela Renee is a homebred for the Siena Farm of owners Anthony Manganaro, Ignacio Patino and David Pope.
The dam of 2011 GI Cigar Mile H. and GI Woodward S. winner To Honor and Serve (Bernardini), Pilfer sold in foal to Hard Spun for $650,000 at the 2008 Keeneland November sale. She produced Elnaawi, a colt by Street Sense in 2010. The colt sold to Shadwell for $500,000 as a September yearling and went on to finish third in the 2013 GIII Gotham S. In foal to Bernardini, Pilfer fetched a final bid of $1.95 million from Borges Torrealba at the 2012 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November sale. The colt she was carrying at that sale recently sold for $750,000 at the Keeneland September sale. Pilfer produced a colt by Bernardini in 2013 and a filly by the Darley stallion this spring.
