‘Cool’ Leads Deep Debutante

Pegram, Watson and Weitman’s Pretty N Cool (Scat Daddy) leads an intriguing field of 11 in Saturday evening’s GI Del Mar Debutante S. The Bob Baffert trainee earned a solid 95 Beyer Speed Figure for a front-running romp in the slop here July 19, and had no trouble rating en route to an easy win over Gomo (Uncle Mo), One True Kiss (Warrior’s Reward) and Right There (Eskendereya) in the GII Sorrento S. Aug. 12.
Fellow Hall of Fame conditioner Jerry Hollendorfer has never won the Debutante, but has three very good chances to break through. Fox Hill Farms’ Songbird (Medaglia d’Oro) was named a ‘TDN Rising Star’ for her 6 1/2-length debut score here July 26. The $400,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling, a daughter of GSW Ivanavinalot (West Acre), must overcome a slight disadvantage breaking from the far-outside post. Hollendorfer also saddles Surfside Tiara (Scat Daddy). Second at Los Alamitos Racecourse as the chalk July 4, she came through with a decisive 5 1/4-length tally going a sixteenth shorter than this Aug. 9. Despite being the highest price on the morning line of Hollendorfer’s representatives at 15-1, Stays in Vegas (City Zip) is the most accomplished. Let go somehow at 6-1 in Pleasanton’s Juan Gonzalez Memorial S. July 4, the chestnut aired by six lengths. Se continued her domination of the fair circuit with a 3 3/4-length romp in the Wine Country Debutante S. at Santa Rosa Aug. 14.
One of the more interesting runners signed on here is Come to Mischief (Into Mischief), who makes her first start for Loooch Racing Stable and Peter Walder. Dismissed at 18-1 making her debut for trainer Nicholas Gonzalez, Horse’n Around Racing Stable and Martha Gonzalez in Woodbine’s My Dear S. June 28, the $11,000 KEESEP bargain buy went straight to the front and never looked back en route to a dominant six-length success. “She freaked in her first start,” Walder said of the supplemental entry. “You look at the tape and go ‘My God, holy cow, this is scary.’ It took her a little bit of time for her settling in because of the heat in Florida, but once she did, she’s been fine.”
The Doug O’Neill barn has been red hot this meet, with four stakes wins, including two with juveniles led by GII Best Pal S. winner Nyquist (Uncle Mo) for primary client J. Paul Reddam. Both Gomo and Land Over Sea (Bellamy Road)–a second-out winner over the sod July 29–will carry the Reddam colors. Mitzi Winks (Lookin At Lucky) earned her diploma for a $62,500 tag first up Aug. 6.
My Dynamo (Discreetly Mine), who belied 33-1 odds to score for Jeff Bonde here Aug. 16, rounds out the field.
