MONSTER BEA (g, 2, Hat Trick {Jpn}–Aunt Bea, by Elusive Quality) was sneaky live on the board at 11-1 off a debut fourth sprinting over the fog-shrouded Presque Isle Tapeta June 28 in which he was hard held for most of the journey, was blocked in the stretch and finished well before galloping out a ton ahead. Bounced away from the gate by Taylor Rice, riding for her brother Adam, Monster Bea secured a fairly easy lead and galloped along through a hasslefree opening half-mile. The $2,000 FTKOCT bargain still traveled well on the circle, but drifted away from the fence into about the four path at the head of the lane, allowing Linda Rice trainee Matt King Coal (Cool Coal Man) to lead along the inside for a few strides in upper stretch. But Monster Bea came right back at Matt King Coal, wrested command away and held sway late by 1 1/4 lengths. Conquest Windycity (Tiznow), an $800,000 OBSMAR graduate, switched out on the bend, challenged wide into the stretch and stayed on well to touch Matt King Coal out of second. Favored Deeply Undervalued (Kitten’s Joy) was trapped out wide for most of the trip and emptied out a bit late to finish in back of mid-division. It was the second longshot victory of the meet for the owner/jockey combination, who scored with 9-1 Don’t Be So Salty (Tiz Wonderful) last Sunday. Lifetime Record: 2-1-0-0, $51,150.
