Breeders’ Cup Winner Chriselliam Euthanized

CHRISELLIAM EUTHANIZED
Chriselliam (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}–Danielli {Ire}, by Danehill), winner of last year’s G1 Fillies Mile and GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, has been euthanized due to complications from a hoof infection. Trained by Charlie Hills for a partnership that included music mogul Chris Wright, former champion jockey Willie Carson and Emily Asprey, the 3-year-old was crowned Europe’s Champion 2-Year-Old Filly last season and was the co-favorite for this year’s G1 1000 Guineas. Hills revealed Jan. 16 that Chriselliam was being treated for a foot infection at the Equine Hospital in near his base in Lambourn, and she was later moved to Newmarket Equine Hospital. A 40,000gns Tattersalls October yearling of 2012, Chriselliam broke her maiden in her second start at Warwick Racecourse last July, and was placed in the Listed Betfred TV S. prior to her Fillies Mile score. She then crossed the Atlantic to win the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf by 2 1/2 lengths.
“It’s a shocker,” trainer Charlie Hills told PA Sport. “Basically she split her shoe and we thought we had it under control, but she took a bad turn and it got reinfected. The antibiotics weren’t working and it spread to her pedal bone. The vets tried everything. It’s been a long month for us all.”
Hills added: “She’d been a wonderful patient and never lost her appetite. It’s very sad for everyone involved and I’d like to thank all the vets who tried to save her. Unbelievably the trophy for the Breeders’ Cup only arrived today.”
