Bringing The ‘Heat’ At Barretts
Yearlings by Unusual Heat were in high demand accounting for three of the five top lots at Tuesday’s Barretts October Sale, which posted across-the-board gains. For the session, 163 yearlings grossed $3,684,700, good for an average of $22,606 (+14.8%) and a median of $15,000 (+15.3%).
“Things went very well,” Barretts Sales General Manager Kim Lloyd offered when reached for comment. “We were very pleased with the turnout by the local horsemen. There were more of the local guys out in mass looking at babies and purchasing them than we’ve had in the past. They carried the day for us.”
A daughter of Unusual Heat from the consignment of Harris Farms topped the proceedings, bringing $175,000 from Joe Ciaglia. Produced by the multiple stakes winning Stormy Atlantic mare Hotlantic, Hip 93 is a half-sister to unbeaten Generous Portion S. heroine and this year’s Barretts May sale topper Long Hot Summer (Street Boss).
Tuesday’s topper was bred in California by Harris Farms and Donald Valpredo. Hotlantic was acquired by the aforementioned duo–while carrying Long Hot Summer–for $47,000 at the 2011 Keeneland November Sale. Ciaglia is the owner of California Skateparks, one of the premier designers of action sports facilities in the world. Ciaglia has campaigned MGISW Weemissfrankie (Sunriver) and GI Blue Grass S. hero Dance With Fate (Two Step Salsa) in partnership. Lloyd concluded, “The market is good. You definitely have to bring decent usable horses to get them sold, but if there is perceived value, they’ll get sold, and sold well.”
