Calhoun Filly Works Her 'Magic' in Delta Princess

Jet Black Magic | Coady

The bettors had virtually handed Saturday's GIII Delta Downs Princess S. to local My Trusty Cat S. romper La Appassionata (Bernardini), but Jet Black Magic (Hold Me Back)–third in that same heat–had other ideas. Let go at 9-1, the Carl Moore Management colorbearer catapulted past the heavy chalk in the lane en route to a 4 1/4-length score. Above Fashion (Paddy O'Prado), second in the My Trusty Cat, rounded out the trifecta. “I'm a little surprised,” admitted winning conditioner Bret Calhoun. “[La Appassionata] showed she was an awful nice filly in the prep–we did have a little bit of a rough trip, but we weren't beating her that day. We thought we were running for second or third [here] at best, but we've really liked this filly for a long time… Today was her day.”

Taking a left turn out of the gate, Jet Black Magic traveled at the back of the pack into the first turn as the chalk sat closer while kept well in the clear. La Appassionata made her move to the fore after a half in :49.60, and Jet Black Magic began to pick up the pace. Above Fashion pestered La Appassionata into the lane, but Jet Black Magic proved the bigger threat, and she ranged up down the center of the track to scamper to the lead and clear without being met with any real resistance.

Calhoun and Moore were celebrating a stakes double Saturday, having already won the Orleans S. earlier on the card with Mayla (Sharp Humor), who is co-owned by Brad Grady.

“It's a great day,” said Moore. “That's two wins on the day, and two stakes–and to have a Louisiana-bred come up and win this kind of race, it's unbelievable… Early on I was kind of concerned where we were, but he gave her a great ride and she came running down the stretch.”

Jet Black Magic, the first graded stakes winner for her second-crop sire (by Giant's Causeway), was a debut winner sprinting at Indiana Downs Sept. 2 before finishing second in a grassy Churchill optional claimer 25 days later. She is out of a half-sister to Louisiana-bred millionaire Superior Storm (Stormy Atlantic). Her dam has a yearling colt by Half Ours and was bred back to Liaison.
