California Chrome and Candy Boy Prep for Santa Anita Derby

Steven Coburn and Martin Perry’s California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) and CRK Stable’s Candy Boy (Candy Ride {Arg}) both worked Saturday morning in preparation for the GI Santa Anita Derby Apr 5.
California Chrome, a 7 1/2 length winner of the local GII San Felipe S. last time Mar. 8, went four furlongs at Los Alamitos in :47.40 under regular rider Victor Espinoza.
Trainer Art Sherman said he was happy with the workout.
“I got him galloping out [five furlongs] in 1:00 2/5,” Sherman said. “He was not wearing blinkers, because I didn’t want him to work too fast, but he’ll wear them in the Santa Anita Derby. He’ll have one more half-mile work Saturday and ship to Santa Anita before the race.”
GII Robert B. Lewis S. hero Candy Boy worked six furlongs in company at Santa Anita in 1:12.80. Gary Stevens, who will be looking to add to his record nine Santa Anita Derby wins with Candy Boy, piloted the colt through the workout. Stevens called the work “solid.”
“He’ll have one more work before the Santa Anita Derby and we’re ready to go,” trainer John Sadler said.
