Cannock Chase Wins the Canadian International
Updated: October 18, 2015 at 9:54 pm
Rabbah Bloodstock’s Cannock Chase (Lemon Drop Kid) burst to the lead in the final sixteenth to secure a 1 1/2-length victory in the GI Pattison Canadian International S., giving Ryan Moore a record-breaking third straight win in the $1-million race. Moore swept the duo of Grade I events on Woodbine’s Sunday card after the Irishman guided Curvy (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) to victory in the GI E.P. Taylor some 45 minutes before the International. “I’m very lucky,” Moore confirmed. “I get to ride very good horses. It worked out well today. I thought this horse was impressive. As soon as he got a bit of room, he quickened. He won easy.”
The 2-1 crowd’s choice, Cannock Chase settled in mid-pack after a slow start as Triple Threat (Fr) (Monsun {Ger}) set an unhurried early pace. Squeezed back in traffic leaving the backstretch, the bay had nowhere to go entering the final straight, but found a seam to run through at midstretch and exploded down the lane to win easily despite drifting out late.
“He had a good turn of foot today,” said Rabbah Bloodstock’s racing manager Bruce Raymond. ” He’s a good horse at this distance. The owner picked him out at Newmarket [yearling sale] for £400,000 and it was a good buy.” Raymond also gave credit to his record-breaking jockey. “Ryan Moore, he’s the best,” Raymond said. “We’re lucky to have him.”
Moore won the 2013 International aboard Joshua Tree (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) and took the race last year with Hillstar (GB) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}).
Reigning Canadian Horse of the Year Up With the Birds (Story Atlantic), who appeared to take a narrow advantage at midstretch just as Cannock Chase was winding up for his challenge, was second.
“I had a perfect trip,” said John Velazquez, aboard the runner-up. “He tipped out and he was running so well that I thought they’re really going to have to run hard to beat him. He was absolutely rolling down the lane. He ran so well today.”
Cannock Chase, making just his 10th lifetime start in the International, capped a three-race win streak with a victory in the G3 Tercentenary S. at Royal Ascot last summer–a race won by his full-brother Pisco Sour in 2011. Sidelined after that win, the bay colt returned with a third-place effort in the Apr. 24 G3 Gordon Richards S. and a runner-up effort in the May 7 G3 Huxley S. He was seventh in the June 17 G1 Prince of Wales’s S. and, returned to softer competition, was second in the Aug. 29 G3 Winter Hill S. He returned to the winner’s circle last time out, taking the Sept. 25 Sakhee Godolphin S. by 3 3/4 lengths at Newmarket.
The winner’s full-brother RNA’d for $135,811 at last year’s Tattersalls October sale. Lynwood Chase, a half-sister to group winner Lord Admiral (El Prado {Ire}), produced a filly by Lemon Drop Kid in 2014.
