Arqana October Underway Tuesday

It's been quite a week for Haras d'Etreham. Not only did the farm manage to buy back into its homebred Almanzor (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) before witnessing him storm to a fourth Group 1 victory in the G1 QIPCO Champion S. on Saturday, but Sans Equivoque (Ger) (Stormy River {Fr}) also added the G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte to her tally of four wins. The filly, who was bred in partnership with Maurice Lagasse, was released from Etreham ownership when sold on Oct. 1 for €180,000 to Sun Bloodstock following success...

Pedigree Insights: Journey

I'm sure you're familiar with what they call the commentator's curse. For example, when some innocent declares that "I've rarely seen him hit his backhand better," you can be sure that the player will mistime his next shot so badly that the ball ricochets off the racquet into the rafters. I perpetrated such an error myself a few weeks ago, when I reviewed the G1 Prix Vermeille for the Thoroughbred Owner & Breeder. "With 24 black-type winners by Sept. 23, including 13 group/graded winners, Dubawi has once again proved himself...

H. the Aga Khan, the 4-year-old captured the G1 Prix Ganay at Saint-Cloud this May and ran second in the 2016 G1 Prix d'Ispahan. Also victorious in the 2015 G2 Grand Prix Maisons-Laffitte Eugene Adam, Dariyan ran with credit to take third in the G1 Longines Hong Kong Vase at Sha Tin last December. He retires with a mark of 13-4-4-1 and...

English highweight Mecca's Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}--Folga {GB}, by Atraf {GB}), oft dubbed the 'Angel of the North', has been officially retired by her Yorkshire based trainer Michael Dods. The 5-year-old was bred by Yeomanstown Stud and bought for 16,000gns out of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale by her trainer before passing her on to owner David Metcalfe while retaining a share for himself. She proved an inspired purchase, winning successive editions of the G1 Coolmore Nunthorpe S. at York in 2015 and 2016, as well as three additional...

Galileo Gold To Race On
Galileo Gold To Race On

Hugo Palmer can look forward to 2017 with an established Group 1 horse under his care, with the news that his Classic winner Galileo Gold (GB) (Paco Boy {Ire}) will stay in training as a 4-year-old. Despite his form tapering off slightly as the year wore on, owners Al Shaqab Racing are obviously keen to see the dual Group 1 winner rescale the heights next year, much to the delight of his trainer. "Al Shaqab have decided to keep Galileo Gold in training which is very exciting for us," said...

O'Brien Mob Handed In RP Trophy

The last flat Group 1 in Britain in 2016 takes place at Doncaster on Saturday, with the winner of the G1 Racing Post Trophy often considered a leading G1 Epsom Derby candidate for the following year. Camelot (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}) was the last winner to go on and score at Epsom (having also won the G1 2000 Guineas en route) and his former trainer Aidan O'Brien is hoping a strong numerical assault on the race will improve his already formidable record in the one-mile contest. O'Brien has won the Racing...

Looming large full of run approaching the final eighth, the 13-10 favourite toyed with her rivals and exerted minimum energy in the closing stages to easily account for Rythmique (Ire) (Casamento {Ire}) by a cheeky 3/4-of-a-length nearing the line. Weekly Wrap for Oct. 17

Put up the money and the horses will come, everyone knows that. And they will come, above all, when the British climate proves so indulgent of a provocation as reckless as staging your most valuable raceday in the middle of October. QIPCO Champions' Day was favoured by clement weather and remarkably neutral going for the time of year. Perhaps even more importantly, however, this time the whole jamboree was rendered less contentious by an interval of three weeks, rather than two, to the Breeders' Cup. Needless to say, these twin...

Boudot Sets New Record

Pierre-Charles Boudot has broken the record for the number of winners ridden in a season by a jockey in France. Win number 229 for Boudot aboard Saphirside (Ire) (Elusive City) at Chantilly on Sunday overtook the previous record of 228 set by Christophe Soumillon. Despite breaking one record, the jockey now has his sights set on another one, with Boudot determined to try and break the European record for wins ridden in a season, set by former German champion Peter Schiergen back in 1995. The 23-year-old jockey has 11 weeks...

Breeders' Cup Option For Star Fillies

Aidan O'Brien and the team at Coolmore and Ballydoyle will decide over the coming week which horses will form part of their Breeders' Cup team. A few of the potential challengers such as Found (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Seventh Heaven (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) were in action at Ascot on Saturday. "They are all fine and all seemed to come out of Ascot good," O'Brien reported. "Don't rule any of them in or out of America, even Found, and we'll decide in seven or 10 days' time." He added, "Seventh Heaven's...
