Harzand Impresses in Pre-Arc Work

Dermot Weld's dual G1 Derby winner Harzand (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) booked his ticket for the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Chantilly on Sunday with an impressive gallop on Tuesday morning. Unfortunately for Weld and Frankie Dettori, though, stablemate Fascinating Rock (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) finds the race coming too soon and will instead be kept back in an attempt to win a second G1 QIPCO Champion S. at Ascot. Harzand's participation had been placed in some doubt when he was struck into during the G1 Irish...

'Burg' Entered in Arqana Arc Sale

Spain Burg (Fr) (Sageburg {Ire}), impressive winner of the G2 Rockfel S. at Newmarket last week, has a date at the Arqana Chantilly 'Arc de Triomphe' Sale on Saturday, as lot 8. Ridden by Frankie Dettori, she handled the step up in class and trip with aplomb, having previously done her racing in the French provinces. "That was her...

'Setting' Goes to Concorde

The prospect of soft ground has tempted Adrian Keatley to run Jet Setting (Ire) (Fast Company {Ire}) in the G3 Coolmore Stud Home Of Champions Concorde S. at Tipperary on Sunday. The County Kildare trainer had been considering races at Ascot and Newmarket in the near future for his G1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine, but is opting to keep her nearer home due to the prevailing weather conditions. Jet Setting, who lowered the colours of Minding (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the fillies' Classic at The Curragh in May, finished sixth...

Frankie Dettori is back on the search for a ride after his intended mount Fascinating Rock (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) was ruled out of the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Dettori, who would be seeking a fifth win in 12-furlong feature, had only been booked by trainer Dermot Weld for the 2015 G1 Champion S. winner on Monday. However, after a gallop on Tuesday morning, Weld informed Dettori's agent Ray Cochrane that Fascinating Rock would not be travelling to Chantilly. "Dermot's horse [Fascinating Rock] doesn't run," said Cochrane. "He...

Almanzor Targets Champion

Impressive G1 Irish Champion S. winner Almanzor (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) is still on target for Ascot's G1 QIPCO Champion S. despite appearing among 19 confirmations for Sunday's G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Chantilly. Following the news fellow Jean-Claude Rouget-trained runner La Cressonniere (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) would miss the race at the weekend, there were rumblings the French Derby winner could stay closer to home instead. However, while he has been left in the showpiece race, connections confirmed it is still the plan to bring him to...

Magical Memory (Ire) (Zebedee {GB}) will not run again this season after suffering a minor setback. However, those plans have been scrapped and connections of the Charlie Hills-trained grey are already looking forward to 2017. Magical Memory, winner of the Stewards' Cup in 2015, established himself as a classy performer with victories in the G3 Abernant and G2 Duke Of York...

'Paris' Leads British Force to France

Last year's G1 Ascot Gold Cup winner Trip To Paris (Ire) (Champs Elysees {GB}) heads a strong British representation in Saturday's G1 Qatar Prix du Cadran at Chantilly following the first forfeit stage. Ed Dunlop's much-travelled gelding made a pleasing reappearance after injury over an inadequate 10 furlongs, but has been below par in two subsequent outings at York and The Curragh. Roger Charlton's Quest For More (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) poses a stern threat to the home team after winning the G2 Lonsdale Cup and going close in the G2...

Do Britain/Ireland Make Enough of Their Thoroughbred Heritage?

In life, sometimes our most valuable commodities are right in front of our noses, but remain underappreciated and underutilised such is our familiarity with them. Horse racing can often seem like a sport that is quite insecure about its own value. Many of the marketing and promotional methods used by racing authorities around the world focus on attracting new fans to the sport using non-racing-related events and gimmicks such as post-race concerts, best-dressed lady competitions and student racedays, the hope being that those that attend for those sideshows will enjoy...
