Newmarket's Historic Run For The Sausages

Thursday marks the start of three days of first-class racing action on Newmarket's July Course, culminating in Saturday's G1 Darley July Cup.  In addition to the regular races of the meeting this year is one of the oddities of the racing calendar, but also one with a more redoubtable history than any other contest on British turf. As Newmarket celebrates its 350th anniversary this year, as important among the Group 1 races and heritage handicaps is the Newmarket Town Plate, which will be run for the 347th time in 2016....

Caulfield Pedigree Insights: Hawkbill

Tapit's legions of fans in the U.S. may be surprised that this remarkable stallion, who appears to be well on his way towards a third consecutive sires' championship, is still awaiting his first black-type winner in Europe. This omission, I should add, owes quite a lot to the fact that Tapit hasn't had a lot of representatives in Britain, Ireland and France. On the other hand, the profile of another champion American stallion--Kitten's Joy--is soaring in Europe, thanks to some fine performances by his 3-year-old sons. Taareef wasn't beaten far...

End Of An Era As Fallon Retires

If there is something poignantly unsurprising about his exit from the stage, slipping away into the shadows just as he seemed to be mastering a new script, then the least Kieren Fallon deserves is that we remember the way he once presented himself so boldly in the starkest of spotlights. For he now requires all the fortitude and indomitability we so admired, in his pomp, to meet far graver challenges beyond the sight of all, and the comprehension of most. From the outside, his recent vacillations may have suggested mere...
