Cox Plate Next For Criterion

Despite only finishing sixth of the seven runners in Wednesday's G1 Juddmonte International at York, Australian trainer David Hayes has expressed his satisfaction with Criterion (NZ) (Sebring {Aus}) and believes the colt will still be a force to be reckoned with back in Australia in the G1 Cox Plate. In Hayes' opinion he feels the horse could have raced closer to the speed and he commented, "We were further back than we wanted--it's probably cost him running fourth. He put himself into the race, it was a bit like his...

by Jessica Martini  When Kevin and Kimberly Nish send a pair of stakes-winning fillies through the sales ring during Thursday's Fasig-Tipton Summer Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale in Lexington, the couple, who race as KMN Racing, will be following through on a business plan developed four years ago.  “We've been advised by Alex [Solis] and Jason [Litt] since we got in the racing business,” explained Kevin Nish. “And we've had a plan that we would buy yearling fillies and then sell some that had become successful to fund the...

Pedigree Insights: Lady Eli

Thanks to the wonders of the internet, I can tell you that December 1, 1971was a day that many would prefer to forget--it was the day that John and Yoko's "Happy Christmas (War is Over)" was released in the U.S.  But over in England it was the day that a batch of 3-year-old fillies was offered by the Aga Khan at Tattersalls' December Sales. It is worth pointing out that the average price in 1971 for a house in the UK was apparently £5,632, so the 4,100gns paid for the...

Letter to the Editor: Jeff Lifson

Jeff Lifson of West Point Thoroughbreds: I was the kid in 10th grade who never thought Jay Gatsby was pathetic. Quite the contrary.  "Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us...it eluded us then, but that's no matter. Tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther...and one fine morning..."  Yesterday afternoon at around 6:45 at Belmont Park, I finally stared face to face with the brilliant green light. It wasn't distant any more. And it made me believe again.  All...

Sweep Still Sweet on Sunday

The morning after ending the 37-year Triple Crown drought, American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) was in fine form, according to trainer Bob Baffert.  "Looking at the horse today, he looked pretty darn good for a horse that just ran a mile and a half," Baffert said outside of Barn 1 in Elmont. "He's a tough horse. Today he looked like he could run back in three weeks."  Baffert allowed members of the media to pet American Pharoah outside of the barn to demonstrate the colt's demeanor.  "I just wanted to share him...

Honor Code Looks Well Morning After Met

GI Metropolitan H. winner Honor Code (A.P. Indy) returned from Saturday's victory in fine form, according to conditioner Shug McGaughey.  "He seemed to come back really good," McGaughey said. "He's a very, very good horse. He got some pace and Javier let him settle, and when he asked him he really finished the last part of it. He had been training really well around here and I thought they would know he was in there, but I didn't know he would dominate the way he did."

A Witness to History

by Harper Hutchins  We have sent TDN intern Harper Hutchins to the last two legs of the Triple Crown to report on the events from a college student's perspective. Her Belmont report follows. As an intern for the Thoroughbred Daily News, I have been given incredible opportunities, varying from learning how to enter European data into TDN Progeny PPs to eating my first hard shell crab in Baltimore before the Preakness. This week, the staff at the TDN sent me to the Belmont to report on the race from a...

Oppenheimer: Horn To Stand in Britain

Anthony Oppenheimer, the owner-breeder of Saturday's G1 Epsom Derby winner Golden Horn (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}), told At The Races Sunday he would love to run his colt in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, and he would later like to stand the horse at stud in Britain.  Oppenheimer noted a tilt at the G1 Coral-Eclipse July 4 will give Golden Horn the chance to race right-handed for the first time.  "I would certainly be up for the Eclipse,” said the 78-year-old. “I'd just like to make sure because he would...

Derby Dettori's Best Moment

A day after claiming his second G1 Epsom Derby, jockey Frankie Dettori said Sunday his win aboard Golden Horn (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) was the “most thrilling moment,” of his career, even topping his historic seven-winner day at Ascot in 1996.  "I told my dad yesterday after the race that in my 28 years of riding that was my most thrilling moment, even more so than Ascot,” Dettori said. "Maybe because I'm older and realized how important it was, or the fact that I am running out of years. It...

Malabar To French Oaks

Malabar finished fourth, beaten 6 1/2 lengths, in the English Guineas May 3 and was eighth in Ireland May 24.  "She had no luck in Ireland; she got murdered in the race and considering that I thought she ran really well," Channon noted.  Malabar has run once previously in France, when...
