Last year's Cartier champion 2-year-old filly Tiggy Wiggy (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), a brave third in the G1 1000 Guineas Sunday after carving out the pace, is set for a return to sprinting. "I was very proud of Tiggy Wiggy,” said trainer Richard Hannon. “We were dipping our toes into unknown territory and she came home with her head held high. You can't say that she didn't stay the mile, but it was only her class that kept her going. We need to make full use of her electric early speed, so it's...
Michael Tabor and Rachel Hood's Christophermarlowe (Tapit), the unbeaten winner of the Investec Derby Trial at Epsom Apr. 22, is among the 14 entries for Saturday's Listed Derby Trial S. at Lingfield. "Christophermarlowe goes to Lingfield on Saturday for the Derby Trial," said trainer John Gosden. "We've put him in the [G3] Chester Vase [May 7] as well, but he'd only run there if it was a monsoon at Lingfield." Christophermarlowe, who is a general 16-1 for the G1 Epsom Derby, could face up to five from Ballydoyle, including the stakes-placed winner Order...
The Dermot Weld-trained, Sheikh Hamdan-owned Zawraq (Ire) (Shamardal), a general 10-1 for the G1 Epsom Derby on the back of an eye-catching score in the Listed 2000 Guineas Trial S. at Leopardstown Apr. 12, could skip Sunday's G3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial if the ground is too soft, Weld told At the Races. Zawraq's regular rider, Pat Smullen, will also be serving a suspension this weekend, and that could also affect the decision. "We will make a decision during the week about Zawraq,” Weld said. “We will see what the weather does...
The focus of the Inglis Australian Broodmare and Weanling Sale turned to select broodmares for its second session Monday, and like the Easter yearling sales at the Newmarket complex in Sydney last month, there was a decidedly international flavor to proceedings, with the top two lots going to Chinese investor Yu Long Investments. The session saw strength at the top of the market, but figures were down across the board. A total of 136 horses changed hands for A$6,527,100 for a buyback rate of 24.4%, up 9% from 12 months...
By Kelsey Riley The driving rain that forced the postponement of opening day of The Championships seemed a distant memory in Sydney Sunday as an international cross-section of buyers inspected the 605 yearlings on offer for the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale under bright and sunny skies. Shoppers from all corners of the globe have descended on the Newmarket paddocks, and Inglis bloodstock director Jonathan D'Arcy said the crowds have been strong since showing began last Wednesday. “All week we've had good numbers here,” D'Arcy said. “Talking to the studs,...
by Bill Finley Yes, anything is possible, particularly when it comes to a 20-horse rodeo where form sometimes goes out the window. But can you really see someone other than Todd Pletcher or Bob Baffert winning the Kentucky Derby? Whatever chance those not named Todd or Bob had of winning the Derby diminished significantly yesterday as the two big guns from the sport's two most prominent stables performed magnificently. Carpe Diem (Giant's Causeway) always did look like Pletcher's best hope for winning the Kentucky Derby and he looks even better now...
Three Chimneys Farm and Besilu Stable's Dubai Sky (Candy Ride {Arg}), winner of the Mar. 21 GIII Spiral S., suffered a condylar fracture to his left hind cannon bone during a gallop at Churchill Downs Saturday. “The fracture was surgically repaired by Dr. Larry Bramlage at Rood and Riddle earlier this [Saturday] afternoon and Dubai Sky has recovered from surgery and is now safely back in his stall,” reported Three Chimneys' chief operating officer Chris Baker. “He will be out of training for several months, but with appropriate healing should make it...
Retired trainer Robert Lake, a stalwart in New York for four decades, died Wednesday at the age of 82 at Saratoga Hospital. Lake settled in Saratoga Springs in 1999 after a 49-year career that began July 7, 1950, when the 17-year-old won with the first horse he saddled, Big Fly, at Pleasanton, CA. He was born Aug. 18, 1932 in San Francisco. His introduction to racing came as 7-year-old selling newspapers at the old Tanofran Racetrack. After gaining experience as a trainer in his home state, Lake moved to Chicago...
by T.D. Thornton The Internal Revenue Service filed a "notice of proposed rulemaking" and opened a 90-day public comment period on Wednesday that deals with changes to the reporting of gambling winnings. But the proposed changes, as currently written, do not specifically include pari-mutuel wagering. The IRS's "unified agenda" on this matter, as detailed on the Federal Register website, only deals with "Winnings From Bingo, Keno, and Slot Machines." To remedy this, National Thoroughbred Racing Association President Alex Waldrop said he will spearhead an intensely focused awareness campaign over the next three...
Alex and JoAnn Lieblong's 'TDN Rising Star' The Big Beast (Yes It's True) exited his Oaklawn allowance victory Mar. 1 in good order and will make his next start in that venue's GIII Count Fleet Sprint H. Apr. 9. "It's all just turned out very, very good for us," trainer Tony Dutrow said. "Those horses [in the allowance] made him run. I've got nothing but respect for those horses that tried him." Sunday's race was the first start for The Big Beast since his victory in Saratoga's GI King's Bishop S. Aug....
A potential warm-up for the G1 Dubai Turf (formerly Dubai Duty Free), the G1 Jebel Hatta was won last year by Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum's Vercingetorix (SAf) (Silvano {Ger}), who went on to take second in the main race, over six lengths off “Best Racehorse in the World” Just A Way (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}) and rounded off his 2014 campaign with a third to Designs On Rome (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) in Honk Kong's G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup. The Mike de Kock trainee seemed as strong as...
There has been a lot of buzz surrounding champion Take Charge Brandi (Giant's Causeway) as the racing world waited for her connections to decide whether she would make her next start in Oaklawn's GIII Honeybee S. Saturday or face the boys for the first time in the GII Rebel S. Mar. 14. The 'TDN Rising Star's' name was absent from the Honeybee field, which drew today, so according to her owner Willis Horton it is on to the Rebel. It appeared that the filly was likely Rebel bound Monday after breezing five furlongs at...
