Golden Horn Fresh And Well

Trainer John Gosden believes it will be at least a week before deciding whether to point undefeated G1 Epsom Derby and this Saturday's G1 Coral-Eclipse S. winner Golden Horn (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) towards the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. at Ascot July 25.  "I'm very pleased with him," Gosden told At The Races. "He ate up everything last night. He had a good  lead out this morning. He had a good pick of grass and is on very good terms with himself. That is always a major bonus...

Brazen Works On July Course

In preparation for this weeks G1 July Cup at Newmarket, the Chris Waller trained Brazen Beau (Aus) (I Am Invincible {Aus}) is scheduled to work on the July Course Monday morning at 6.00am to familiarize himself with the track. The dual Group 1 winner in his native Australia was beaten in slightly controversial fashion last time in the G1 Diamond Jubilee S. at Royal Ascot when jockey Craig Williams chose a solitary route up the stands side of the track before being collared close home by Undrafted (Purim). One of the Godolphin...

Effinex Gets Better of Tonalist in the Suburban

Jimmy Jerkens is not exactly the Giant Killer his late father was, but Effinex, who bolted and was eased last time in the GII Brooklyn H. on Belmont S. day June 6, was equipped with new hydraulics and found the wire just ahead of last year's GI Belmont S. hero Tonalist in Saturday's Suburban H.  One of the more interestingly named horses in training, Effinex crosssed the wire in front just once in seven starts for trainer David Smith, but has undergone a renaissance under the Jerkens tutelage. Bet down...

Durban July Ever-Unpredictable

By Liesl King Predictable is one thing the G1 Vodacom Durban July never is. Once the South African National Anthem is sung and the gates crash open to the roar of the crowd, the formbook flies out the window and absolutely anything can happen. Yet, after the 2014 running of the race--where the winner wasn't the winner--surely 2015 would be a more normal race.  Statistics suggested that a 3-year-old would return victorious. After all, they were highly rated, lightly weighted and two of the top three were trained by the...

Deutsches Dreams

Despite the loss of the injury-afflicted likely favorite Quasillo (Ger) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), Sunday's G1 IDEE 146th Deutsches Derby at Hamburg still offers an enticing brew with a colt in Shimrano (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) who would be unbeaten were it not for encountering that absent rival. It was in a conditions race over this trip at Munich Apr. 19 that he was put in his place by Quasillo, and the form of that contest was given credence by the winner's subsequent exploits in the G3 Bavarian Classic. While Quasillo went on...

Champion sprinter Work All Week (City Zip) headlines a field of nine signed on for Sunday's GII Smile Sprint S. at Gulfstream Park. Work All Week has worked a pair of sharp bullets beneath the Twin Spires since, including a best-of-53 four-furlong move in :46 1/5 June 28. "We weren't looking for him to work that fast, but he did it all on his own,"...

The 5-year-old Merry Meadow (Henny Hughes) is one of the more accomplished runners on paper, with wins in Gulfstream's GIII Sugar Swirl S. Dec. 13 and GIII Hurricane Bertie S. Feb. 14, respectively. She, however, had a three-race winning streak snapped when a well-beaten sixth after dueling early as the heavy favorite in the GII Inside Information S. here...

Charline On Track For Falmouth

Last year's GI Beverly D. S. winner Euro Charline (GB) (Myboycharlie {Ire}), scratched behind the gates after failing to load for the G2 Duke of Cambridge S. at Royal Ascot, has passed a gate test and is on track for the July 10 G1 Falmouth S. at Newmarket.  “What happened at Royal Ascot came completely out of the blue as, apart from on her 2-year-old debut, she has never had an issue [with the stalls],” said trainer Marco Botti. “So she was forced to miss a race that we had been aiming...

Champ Attempts Title Defense

Champion Main Sequence (Aldebaran) looks to return to his winning ways with a successful title defense Sunday in Monmouth Park's GI United Nations S. A victory in this "Win and You're in" event would secure him a spot in the starting gate at Keeneland Oct. 31 to attempt another title defense in the GI Breeders' Cup Turf. After three seasons racing in Europe, the Flaxman Holdings homebred stamped himself as one to watch with an impressive victory in this event last term while making his American debut for trainer Graham Motion. Kentuckian's Derby

The promising Kentuckian (Tiznow), a runaway winner of the seven-furlong GIII Lazaro Barrera S. at Santa Anita last time May 10, makes his route debut against four rivals in Saturday's GII Los Alamitos Derby. Tabbed as a 'TDN Rising Star' off a double-digit debut win at Golden Gate Mar. 7, the Fox Hill Farms colorbearer finished a troubled third in the San Pedro S. Apr. 12. The gray, a $610,000 KEESEP yearling purchase, has been working bullets for this, including a six-furlong move in 1:11 in Arcadia June 25. "He was very impressive last...
