Genetic testing company Equinome has released a new test, its Equinome Elite Performance Test v2.0. The test was developed using DNA from over 2,000 Thoroughbreds from Europe, Australasia, South Africa and North America, and it scans 70,000 genetic variants on every horse submitted for analysis. “The test was developed using modified statistical algorithms that have been so successfully applied to livestock animal breeding,” said Equinome co-founder Emmeline Hill. “Genomic selection has revolutionized the pig, dairy and beef breeding sectors and we expect that, similarly, the Thoroughbred industry will gain significant...
Wesley Ward will arrive in Ascot armed with as big a team he has ever brought to the Royal Meeting. Ward will saddle ten horses throughout the week when he bids to improve on his already impressive strike rate at the meeting. He became the first American-based trainer in history to saddle a winner at the Royal meeting when Strike The Tiger (Tiger Ridge) struck gold in the Listed Windsor Castle S. in 2009 and has since added a further three Royal victories to his CV. The trainer's first representative of the...
American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) returned to the track Friday morning for the first time since becoming the first horse in 37 years to complete the Triple Crown, jogging over the Churchill main track with Jorge Alvarez in the saddle. "He went great," Alvarez said. "He still feels the same. It's amazing how this horse does it." Also in attendance were trainer Bob Baffert, who liked what he saw. "It's amazing what he's been through and it looks like he's starting to get even better now," Baffert said. "I can...
Mike de Kock, the leading foreign trainer by total number of wins at the Dubai World Cup Carnival, has announced that he will thoroughly revise plans for his 2015 runners, following below-par performances from all his seven starters on the new dirt track at the opening meeting Jan 8. De Kock, who also trained Mushreq (Aus) (Flying Spur {Aus}) and Sanshaawes (SAf) (Ashaawes) to run second and fourth, respectively, in the Listed Singspiel S. on turf, said on his website, "After tonight, we can be certain that there is a...
Team Valor International and Southern Equine Stable's Savoy Stomp (Medaglia d'Oro), the top-priced colt at the 2013 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale, will look to get his sophomore campaign off to a good start in Saturday's GIII Lecomte S. at Fair Grounds. The $875,000 yearling debuted a winner over seven furlongs at Belmont last September before running fifth behind Blofeld (Quality Road) in the one-mile GII Nashua S. Nov. 2. He concluded his juvenile campaign with a third-place finish as the 7-5 favorite in a Dec. 17 optional claimer at Gulfstream Park. The winner...
GIII LeComte S. winner International Star (Fusaichi Pegasus) covered five panels in 1:01.56 at Gulfstream Park Saturday in his first work back since that victory Jan. 17. "This was his first work back and he worked great," trainer Mike Maker said. "All is well." International Star is slated for a start in the GII Risen Star S. at the Fair Grounds Feb. 21.
Trainer Chad Brown sent a host of stakes horses, including GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner Lady Eli (Divine Park) and GI Breeders' Cup F/M Turf runner-up Stephanie's Kitten (Kitten's Joy), out to work Monday at Palm Meadows. Sheep Pond Partners' Lady Eli, who worked three furlongs over the turf in :38.75, was returning to the work tab for the first time since her Breeders' Cup victory. “I thought she worked great,” Brown said of Lady Eli. “I wanted her to go down there and work in :38 and change and that is exactly...
Trainer Peter Moody has won four of the last five runnings of the G1 C F Orr S.--the first Australian Group 1 of the year--and the leading Victorian trainer has a good shot to extend his record with early favorite Dissident (Aus) (Sebring {Aus}) in tomorrow's edition. Dissident rose to prominence when taking the G2 Hobartville S. and the G1 Randwick Guineas back-to-back as a 3-year-old this time last year, and he added the G1 Memsie S. over this distance and the G1 Makybe Diva S. over a mile in the Australian...
The Goffs February Sale drew to a close with its mares and mixed bloodstock session yesterday and posted encouraging figures. A total of 180 horses changed hands yesterday for €2,873,600 and a buyback rate of 18.1%, which was down substantially from last year's mark of 36.1%. While the average was down 18.6% to €15,964, it is important to consider that last year's session was boosted by the sale of Jim Bolger's Group 1 winner Night Visit (GB) (Sinndar {Ire}) for €975,000. The median is therefore a more accurate reflection of...
Arrowfield resident Smart Missile (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) has been one of the most sought after first-season sires at the Australian yearling sales this year, and that trend continued yesterday when his colt from Goldin Farms topped the opening session of the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale when selling to trainer Tony McEvoy for A$220,000. While that top price outpaced last year's day one topper of A$115,000, the rest of the key figures experienced slight decreases. A total of 67 horses sold from 97 offered for A$2,341,000, down from A$2,604,000 last year...
Economic issues, along with Internet gaming, immigration and racehorse drug and therapeutic medication regulation and testing are the issues of highest priority in the federal legislative agenda for the National Thoroughbred Racing Association for the 114th Congress, which convened in January. In the previous Congress, the NTRA was able to secure passage of three bills critical to the horse racing industry: standardized, 3-year depreciation for racehorses, a bonus depreciation structure which permits taxpayers to depreciate 50% of qualified property in the year it is purchased and placed into service (e.g....
G1 Carlos Pellegrini hero Idolo Porteno (Arg) (Jump Start) heads a strong Argentine delegation and an international field of 13 bidding for glory in the G1 Longines Gran Premio Asociacion Latinoamericano de Jockey Clubes e Hipodromos, South America's most prominent weight-for-age event, Saturday. This year's 31st renewal of the Latinoamericano, which will be run at 2100 meters on the dirt, marks the second time it will be staged at Hipodromo Argentino de Palermo in Buenos Aires. The race is reserved for horses 3-years-old and older who are nominated by the nation and...
