Darley Acquires Majority Interest in Cairo Prince
Officials at Darley have announced that the operation has acquired a majority interest in leading sophomore Cairo Prince (Pioneerof the Nile–Holy Bubbette, by Holy Bull), winner of the GII Holy Bull S. in his 2014 debut Jan. 25. The gray colt will race in the colors of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum’s Godolphin Stable in conjunction with previous owners Terry Murray, Paul Braverman, Harvey A. Clarke and Craig W. Robertson III. Kiaran McLaughlin will continue as the trainer.
“We are excited to be involved with such a promising 3-year-old at this time of the year, and it is also special that our long-time trainer is handling the horse and we have the opportunity to share this excitement with the colt’s current owners,” commented Darley USA President Jimmy Bell.
Bred by Richard and Katherine Elam, the $250,000 Keeneland September graduate defeated Harpoon (Tapit) in his Oct. 6 debut at Belmont Park ahead of a 2 1/2-length victory in the GII Nashua S. around Aqueduct’s one-turn mile Nov. 3. He missed by a nose to “TDN Rising Star” Honor Code (A.P. Indy) after taking the worst of it in the GII Remsen S. Nov. 30 and reported home a 5 3/4-length winner of the Holy Bull. He is slated to make his next start in the GI Florida Derby Mar. 29.
Added Braverman, “We have been in the same barn as the Darley horses for years, always root for them when they run, and have great respect for and known Jimmy Bell for years. The partners of Cairo Prince were intent on doing what was best for the horse and what was best for Kiaran McLaughlin. This partnership with Darley and Goldophin puts us with exceptional horsemen for the management of the horse’s racing career and post-race life as a stallion.”
