Deceived Tunes Up For Gotham

Treadway Racing Stable’s Deceived (Broken Vow), third behind Samraat (Noble Causeway) in the Dec. 18 Damon Runyon S., tuned up for Saturday’s GIII Gotham S. with a six-furlong drill in company with Grade I winner Sweet Reason(Street Sense) over the Belmont training track Sunday. The two sophomores both worked in 1:16.10. Coming off an 8 1/4-length romp versus state-bred allowance foes Jan. 31, Deceived will be making his first start in open company in the Gotham. Stablemate Sweet Reason, winner of last year’s GI Spinaway S., has been off since finishing fourth in the Nov. 2 GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. “She kind of opened up a little at the end, and he came back on the inside for the gallop out, so it worked out well for them, mentally,” reported trainer Leah Gyarmati. “They both thought they won.”
Gyarmati added the Apr. 5 GII Gazelle S. was a possible target for Sweet Reason. “I’d like to make the Gazelle; I’m still trying to figure out how I’m going to get there,” said Gyarmati. “With the weather, I don’t want to do anything stupid. I’m going to just train her until she’s ready. When she’s ready, I’m going to find something, and we’ll go from there.”
Also considered a possible for the Gotham, the Todd Pletcher-trained Master Lightning (Pulpit) breezed four furlongs over the Belmont training track Sunday in :49.55. The Alan Cook colorbearer, winner of an optional claimer at Aqueduct last December, began the year with a seventh-place effort in the Jan. 4
GII Jerome S. and is coming off a fourth-place finish in the Jan. 25 Miracle Wood S. at Laurel.
“[Master Lightning] was in hand and galloped out very strongly and looked very well,” Byron Hughes, assistant to Pletcher, said. “His coat is shining and looks great.”
Pletcher could also be represented in the Gotham by Surfing U S A (Roman Ruler) and Harpoon (Tapit). Training at Palm Meadows Sunday, the two colts shared the four-furlong bullet time of :47.95. Click here to share.
