Destiny Calling
Destiny Calling…
The use of Lasix and other raceday medication has been debated in detail in these pages, but a warning shot was fired across the bows of those in favor of the continued use of drugs in U.S. racing by Californian Jon Kelly, who has become a regular visitor to Park Paddocks, both for the yearling and breeding stock sales.
Speaking after spending 650,000gns on a Galileo (Ire) filly out of the late George Washington’s sole produce Date With Destiny (Ire) (lot 261), Kelly said, “I’ve been trying hard to buy during this sale but I keep losing to people who own countries. I’m going to have to buy a small country of my own so I can compete.”
He added, “I’ve been coming to Tattersalls for the last few years because it fits my program perfectly. I’m here because I don’t like the use of drugs in America. It’s hurting our breed and I’m fed up with it.”
Kelly has certainly put his money where his mouth is over this issue, and now has 11 horses in training with Luca Cumani in Newmarket, including his most recent purchase, who was bred and consigned by Newsells Park Stud.
“I have another lovely Galileo filly with Luca, a 2-year-old named Raggedy Ann, and we’re very pleased with her,” added Kelly, who also keeps broodmares in Ireland.”
