Dynaformer Colt Impresses At Newbury

Earning TDN Rising Star status when electrifying on his 3-year-old bow over a mile here Apr. 18, Intilaaq found the G1 2000 Guineas all too much to ask when unable to back up the quality of that eight-length win when 15th in the May 2 Newmarket Classic. Granted a rest subsequently, the imposing bay returned to turn over the G1 St James’s Palace S. third Consort with a performance that suggests he can take high rank in the second half of the season. Restrained in third by Paul Hanagan early as Mustadeem (Ire) (Arcano {Ire}) set off in isolation to make it a test, the homebred had Consort on his tail as he strode ever closer to his rabbit inside the last half mile. As the pair went either side of the rapidly weakening long-time leader with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining, it was Intilaaq who had the most stamina and he was firmly in command at the line where the margin to the smart older yardsticks Fire Fighting and Calling Out (Fr) (Martaline {GB}) offered the clearest indication of the gravity of the form. “He’s very exciting and hopefully there are better things to come,” trainer Roger Varian said. “He’s well entered up–he’s got options going forward. The G3 Rose of Lancaster S. [at Haydock Aug. 8] could be a possibility.” Consort’s rider Frankie Dettori was offering no major excuses for the defeat. “The winner was very good. I got upsides him, but he just pulled away,” he explained. “If I had to be critical, he just a little bit too keen in the first three furlongs. If you take the winner away, he wins by seven lengths. He’s still in mile mood at the minute, which is why he was a bit keen, but a mile and a quarter is what he wants.”
