F-T Midlantic Sale Starts Today
Fasig-Tipton’s Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale begins its two-day run Monday in Timonium, Maryland with the first of 580 catalogued head scheduled to go under the hammer at 10 a.m.
“The 2-year-old sales have been good this year, so we’re hoping to continue that trend,” said Fasig-Tipton Midlantic’s Sales Director Paget Bennett. “There are so many levels to this sale. We’ve got the people who can buy at the upper levels, we’ve got the little people that don’t have as much to spend, but still can find a useful horse here. There is something for everybody. They don’t feel like everybody is going to be on the same horse.”
The Midlantic sale was well-represented on the Triple Crown trail this year, with 2013 graduates Vicar’s In Trouble (Into Mischief), winner of the GII Louisiana Derby, in the GI Kentucky Derby, and “TDN Rising Star” Bayern (Offlee Wild), runner-up in the GIII Derby Trial, running in Saturday’s GI Preakness S.
This year’s catalogue offers some prized pedigrees, according to Bennett.
“Consignors are very excited about what they’ve brought here,” she explained. “We always have some very special horses here, but we have some consignors who are especially excited about their horses this year. We’re looking to get a lot of horses sold in the next couple of days.”
Last year’s Midlantic sale saw 249 horses sell for a gross of $16,675,000. The average of $66,968 was up 24.9% from 2012, while the median soared 42.9% to $40,000. A colt by Malibu Moon brought the auction’s top price of $450,000, selling from the Eddie Woods consignment to trainer Gary Contessa, agent for Wounded Warrior Stables.
