Galileo’s Bondi Beach Awarded St Leger Decision in Stewards’ Room
Updated: September 12, 2015 at 2:39 pm
Having fallen the wrong side of a stewards’ verdict when runner-up to Storm the Stars (Sea the Stars {Ire}) in York’s G2 Great Voltigeur S. last month, Bondi Beach benefitted from the intervention of Doncaster’s adjudicators to claim victory in the G1 St Leger Saturday. Improving steadily from an initial fifth position to turn for home in a share of third, the 2-1 joint-favorite became embroiled in skirmishes with £50,000 supplementee Simple Verse (Ire) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}) when duelling for sumpremacy inside the final quarter mile and stayed on resolutely under a continued drive to finish a head behind that subsequently demoted distaffer. Bondi Beach’s pacesetting stablemate Fields of Athenry (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) rallied gamely once headed and stayed on to finish a further 1 3/4 lengths behind in third.
