Galileo’s Coolmore Swoops Late for Park Glory

Coolmore, who hit the board in maidens going one mile here Aug. 22 and over seven furlongs at Leopardstown Sept. 12, made the leap forward by swooping late for a race in which two of the Aidan O’Brien stable’s three prior winners–Imagine (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells) and Qualify (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus})–subsequently annexed the G1 Epsom Oaks. Settled along the inside through halfway sporting first-time cheekpieces in this black-type debut, the chestnut weaved a scenic passage under a continued drive inside the final quarter mile and quickened smartly once into the clear to claim a career high in the dying strides. In so doing, she exacted revenge on Anamba, who had gained a narrow verdict when the pair met at the Foxrock track last time. “I thought she would win in Leopardstown, but it was on the inside track, she was a bit green and the ground was a bit dead,” explained O’Brien. “I always thought she wanted to go a mile and she ran today to get more experience. She is crying out to go a mile this year. They went a good gallop, she came home well and I’m delighted with that.”
