Gomo (Uncle Mo), winner of the GI Darley Alcibiades S. at Keeneland Oct. 2, will miss the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, it was announced Friday. The Reddam Racing colorbearer is scheduled to undergo minor surgery to have an ankle chip removed.
“Mr. [Paul] Reddam already has Land Over Sea for that race,” said Jack Sisterson, assistant to trainer Doug O’Neill. “Gomo is a Grade I winner and we are going to let her mature over the winter. She’ll be fine.”
Reddam and O’Neill’s three other bullets turned in works at Santa Anita and Keeneland Friday a.m.
Undefeated GI FrontRunner S. winner and GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile contender Nyquist (Uncle Mo) worked five furlongs in 1:01.80 on Santa Anita’s main track after the 6:30 a.m. renovation break Friday. Regular rider Mario Gutierrez was aboard. “He worked great,” O’Neill said. “I got him the last eighth in :12. We’re super-happy.” Land Over Sea (Bellamy Road), runner-up in the GI Chandelier S. Sept. 26, covered the same distance in :59.80.
Ralis (Square Eddie), winner of Saratoga’s GI Hopeful S., worked five furlongs in :59.60 in Lexington Friday. He heads to the Juvenile after finishing a well-beaten sixth in a sloppy renewal of Belmont’s GI Champagne S. Oct. 3.
“[Jockey] Drayden [Van Dyke] said he had to angle out a bit off the rail because a couple of horses were working in front of him,” Sisterson said. “He got over the ground well and I chatted with Doug and he was happy about the work.”
