In Wednesday’s TDN, we introduced to you the six ‘colts’ up for auction at Friday’s Horsemen of All Ages Bachelor Sale at the Red Mile in Lexington. Today, we profile the six females ‘on offer,’ a list headed by the TDN’s own International Editor Kelsey Riley, who is being ‘consigned’ by our publication.
A proud Canadian, Kelsey worked at Schonberg Farm and Woodbine Racetrack while completing a degree in media studies at the University of Guelph-Humber in Toronto, and became the charter member of the fan club of Canadian Triple Crown winner Wando. In 2010 she was accepted to the Darley Flying Start program, and spent two years working and learning in the Thoroughbred industries in Ireland, England, Kentucky, Australia, and Dubai. This unique opportunity allowed Kelsey to learn from industry leaders and visit most of the world’s major racetracks, stud farms, and bloodstock sales companies. As the International Editor, Kelsey is largely responsible for all of the content in the TDN from outside of the United States. After a period of time when even Kelsey didn’t know exactly what or where to call home, she is now happily bedded down in Lexington and is looking forward to representing the TDN tomorrow evening.
“The Race for Education is a great cause because education is so important, but not always accessible to everyone, so anything we can do to help alleviate that is great,” Kelsey said. “I know how much my education has meant to my career in the Thoroughbred business; I wouldn’t be close to where I am without it, so if standing up on stage and embarrassing myself for an evening will help others get that opportunity, I’m all for it. Having said that, although it will be embarrassing, I think it will be a great evening. I got to see the venue the other day and meet some of the other bachelors and bachelorettes, and I think we’re in for a pretty fun night. So if you don’t have your tickets yet, you can still get them atwww.raceforeducation.org.”
In brief, here are the other five ‘fillies’ ‘consigned’ to Friday night’s events:
PATRICIA BROWN (consigned by Team Valor Int’l)
A fan of University of Kentucky basketball (had to sweat out that LSU game, eh?), the Red Hot Chili Peppers and oyster bars, Trish won’t hold it against you if you don’t wine and dine her in Singapore, even if it’s a dream of hers. Favorite horse?: Man O’ War.
JENNIFER DELAITTRE (consigned by Stonestreet Farm)
A native of Mount Vernon, Washington, Jennifer is a ‘Wildcat’ of sorts, having graduated from the University of Arizona’s Race Track Industry Program before relocating to the Bluegrass, where she worked for Castleton Lyons and Three Chimneys. She now hangs out with the likes of Rachel Alexandra and Dreaming of Julia at Stonestreet Farm.
“The families of Stonestreet employees have directly benefitted from the great programs offered by Race for Education. We are thrilled to be able to support this very effective charity and hope to see lively bidding this Friday, particularly on Hip 6!”
–Lesley Howard, General Manager, Stonestreet Farm
PAM NYSTROM (consigned by Casner Racing)
A one-time ‘Entrepreneur of the Year,’ Pam was invited to the prestigious New York Fashion Week five times and was asked to be a presenter in a trade show in Las Vegas. A fan of The Judds, Pam is currently providing professional nail services at the Carmalicia Salon in Lexington.
NICOLE SCATES (consigned by Four Star Sales)
Nicole has the distinction–or misfortune, you decide–of having attended both the University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky, but now calls Lexington home. If you like to bust a move, be forewarned. Nicole apparently excels at the ‘Elaine’ dance from Seinfeld.
“The Race for Education has been in operation for 12 years and it is a very well-run and efficiently run organization. Initially it was set up to provide scholarships to children related to the industry, but has morphed into a number of schools that have the ‘Starting Gate’ program. I’ve been to several of the classrooms and it’s amazing to see the children that are being helped and how much help they can really use and how important this program is to them in getting the kind of education that will put them on the right track for the rest of their lives.”
–Four Star Sales’s Kerry Cauthen
BRIANNE SHARP (consigned by Darley)
Born and raised in Arkansas and a graduate of the state university, Brianne moved to Kentucky for the Kentucky Equine Management Internship Program and also participated in the Darley Flying Start Program. She is simultaneously pursuing an MBA at UK while working as the stallion marketing and research coordinator at Darley, likes Indian food and Fleetwood Mac and is happy watching hoops or hanging with Baxter & Barbara, her two cats.
