LANKAN RUPEE UPSTAGED
Australian sprinter Lankan Rupee (Aus) (Redoute’s Choice {Aus}), currently the highest-rated in the world in his division, had a six-race win streak snapped when second, beaten a short head, by 5-year-old mare Angelic Light (Aus) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) in the G2 McEwen S. at Moonee Valley yesterday. The 5-year-old gelding was making his first start since running away with the G1 T J Smith S. at Randwick Apr. 12, which followed victories in the G1 Newmarket H. and G1 Oakleigh Plate. The Robbie Griffiths-trained Angelic Light had finished second in the G1 Robert Sangster Classic Apr. 27, and was third first-up in the Listed Carlyon S. at Moonee Valley Aug. 23. She was earning her first Group 1 victory.
Lankan Rupee’s trainer Mick Price was upbeat in defeat. “There’ll be no change to the plans,” he told Racenet.com.au. “The horse jumped and raced fresh and you had a horse slip-streaming him that’s hard fit. It made the difference and he got pinged on the line. In a preparation sense, that’s OK.”
