EDISON (c, 3, Bernardini–Heart of Grace, by Exploit), fifth on debut going 1 1/16 miles on the lawn here Dec. 22, was overlooked at 8-1 for this second attempt. Away well from his rail draw, he dictated terms from the get-go, clocking early splits of :23.68 and :47.95. Notability (English Channel) pressed him every step of the way and the pair were 10 lengths clear of their competition on the backstretch.
The field began to catch up in the lane, but Edison was never seriously threatened and strode home to a four-length graduation. Another son of Bernardini, Four More, got up for second and Notability hung on for third. “We didn’t really have much of a plan,” winning trainer Todd Pletcher admitted.
“I just told [jockey] Luis [Saez] that this horse has got one strong, steady run in him. He’s not quick, but he’s steady. The main thing was just to get him into a good rhythm. He got a good start and Luis took advantage of it. He ran well. It was an improvement from his first race, and we thought the way he trained after his first race really helped him. We felt like he moved forward after having run.”
Edison was purchased privately after RNA’ing for $525,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale in 2012. Consigned by Ciaran Dunne’s Wavertree Stables, the colt worked in :10 3/5 before selling to Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith for $950,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Florida sale last March. Lifetime Record: 2-1-0-0, $28,200. Click for the brisnet.com chart or VIDEO.
