Lucky Hussler achieves second Group 1 victory
Updated: October 10, 2015 at 3:51 pm
As the winner of the G1 William Reid last time in, Lucky Hussler was asked to carry top weight in the large 17 horse field of the G1 Toorak Handicap.
Last start G1 Rupert Clarke S. runner-up Disposition started the punter’s elect just ahead of Lucky Hussler with his stablemate, the G1 Rupert Clarke S. winner Stratum Star another of the favored runners. Jockey Jim Cassidy who jumped from one of the outside barriers eventually crossed the field on Strawberry Boy to settle a length ahead of Kenjorwood, with the lightly weighted Moonovermanhattan traveling well in third. With jockey Glen Boss happy to have Lucky Hussler in a mid-field position, the 6-year-old drifted back through the field as the runs started to come before the home turn, where Boss pulled him out wide to go around the field to be in a challenging position. As Stratum Star hit the lead, it was Disposition who made the first challenge before Lucky Hussler made up many lengths extremely quickly to pull away for a length and a quarter victory in a time of 1.34.57. Finishing second was Disposition, recording another Group 1 placing, while Stratum Star was a further short head back in third.
On pulling up, jockey Glen Boss stated “how easy was that”, clearly indicating the ease of the victory. Trainer Darren Weir indicated that Lucky Hussler could head back to Moonee Valley for a run before heading to the G1 Emirates S. (1600m) on the final day of the Flemington Carnival.
