Melbourne Contenders in Quarantine

MELBOURNE CONTENDERS IN QUARANTINE
With Australia’s spring showpieces–including the G1 Caulfield Cup Oct. 18 and the G1 Melbourne Cup Nov. 4–fast approaching, a number of European contenders have entered quarantine in preparation for their journeys Down Under. Chief amongst those is Red Cadeaux (GB) (Cadeaux Genereux {GB}), who has contested the last three Melbourne Cups, finishing second in 2011 and last year, and eighth in 2012. Red Cadeaux was last seen finishing seventh in the G3 September S. Sept. 6, and also has the Caulfield Cup as an option.
“He [went into quarantine yesterday] and we’ll just wait and see how he adapts,” said trainer Ed Dunlop. “There is no denying it was a disappointing run last time at Kempton, but [jockey] Gerald Mosse reported he was
happy enough with the horse; it just turned out to be a three furlong sprint. It gives us options by going into quarantine early. With regards to the Caulfield Cup, we’ll wait and see what the weather does and the ground. I’d have reservations of running on him very quick ground.”
Also entering quarantine yesterday was the Roger Varian-trained mare Ambivalent (Ire) (Authorized {Ire}), winner of last year’s G1 Pretty Polly S. and this year’s G2 Middleton S. The Ali Saeed colorbearer targets the Caulfield Cup.
“She is very well, training well,” Varian said. “The Caulfield Cup is a new experience for us, but it is a great race and we’d be delighted to be a part of it. She is a tough, versatile filly but is best over a mile and a half on decent ground. Her form is strong and she is a
proven traveler, having been to Dubai and placed third [in this year’s G1 Sheema Classic].”
Trainer Marco Botti is preparing a trio for Australia: German Group 1 winner and last out G3 Geoffrey Freer S. winner Seismos (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire}); the globetrotting Dandino (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and the stakes-winning Renew (Ire)(Dansili {GB}). The Andrew Balding-trained Side Glance (GB) (Passing Glance {GB}), winner of last year’s G1 Mackinnon S. in Australia, has entered quarantine alongside stablemate Van Percy (GB) (Sir Percy {GB}). The Andreas Wohler-trained Protectionist (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) will also join the shipment from England, which is set to arrive in Australia Sept. 27.
