Mine that Bird (Birdstone–Mining My Own, by Smart Strike), winner of the 2009 GI Kentucky Derby, is among the 2015 inductees into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame. Bred in Kentucky by Canadian breeder Peter Lamantia and partners, the bay began his career at Woodbine for conditioner David Cotey and Dominion Bloodstock, annexing the 2008 GIII Grey S. and two other added-money events en route to a Sovereign Award for champion 3-year-old. Purchased privately by Mark Allen's Double Eagle Ranch and Leonard Blach's Buena Suerte Equine, Mine That Bird pulled off a shocking last-to-first upset at 50-1 in the “Run for the Roses” before a runner-up finish in the GI Preakness S. and third in the GI Belmont S. for trainer Chip Woolley. Mine That Bird retired with an overall record of 18-5-2-2 and earnings of $2,228,637.
Also among the Thoroughbred racing inductees are Toronto-born Derby and Preakness-winning jockey Stewart Elliot, whose mounts have earned in excess of $93 million; prominent Ontario-based horseman Bob Anderson; broadcaster Jim Bannon; and trainer Roger Laurin. The induction ceremony will be held at the Mississauga Convention Center on Wednesday, Aug. 5.
