Private Zone Tunes Up
Private Zone (Macho Uno) put in his first workout over the Keeneland oval Sunday, going five furlongs in :59.00 (video) in preparation for the Oct. 31 GI TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint.
With regular workout rider Carlos Marquez Jr. aboard, Private Zone backtracked past the three-quarter pole before turning for the work that produced fractions of :11.20, :22.40, :34.60 and out six furlongs in 1:13.60.
“He’s an old man and he knows what he has to do,” trainer Jorge Navarro said after the work. “My job is to just keep him happy. He’ll work again Saturday, just an easy half.”
Marquez flew into Lexington for the work and will return again for Saturday’s drill.
“He was just gliding out there,” Marquez said. “He handled the track well and couldn’t be doing any better. He’s a good horse to be around.”
Third in last year’s Sprint, the 6-year-old Private Zone is coming off a win in the Aug. 29 GI Forego S.
