Reeves Thoroughbreds Spy Something It Likes
Dean and Patti Reeves, who campaigned Mucho Macho Man (Macho Uno), are looking for mares to support the GI Breeders’ Cup Classic winner, who will be standing his first season at stud next year at Adena Springs. The couple, through agent Eoin Ryan, found what they were looking for Friday at Keeneland, going to $350,000 to secure Harriet (Hard Spun). The 5-year-old mare (hip 1054), consigned by James B. Keogh, sold in foal to Uncle Mo.
“She is a standout today–a beautiful physical,” Ryan said. “She’s in foal to Uncle Mo, whose first yearlings have been very well-received. She’s got a great family and, if we get a runner out of her, it’s a stallion’s pedigree.”
Elisabeth Alexander purchased Harriet for $150,000 at the 2011 Keeneland April sale. The bay made only one start, winning her debut at Parx in January, 2012. Out of Call Me Fleet (Afleet), Harriet is a half-sister to Irish stakes winner and British group-placed Warrior Queen (Quiet American), the dam of multiple graded stakes winner A. P. Warrior (A.P. Indy) and of the dam of MGSW Global View (Galileo {Ire}).
“Dean and Patti are very interested in supporting Mucho Macho Man with some good quality mares and she fits the profile,” Ryan continued.
Harriet was the second purchase of the sale for the Reeveses. The couple also acquired Belle Chaussee (Giant’s Causeway) for $105,000 during Tuesday’s first session of the auction.
Asked how many mares he expected to buy at the November sales, Ryan said, “We’re trying to buy good quality mares and this market is very tough, so we’ll just see what happens.”
Keogh, who was kept busy during Friday’s session, said he was happy with his results so far.
“We’re very, very pleased,” Keogh said. “There is a real premium on quality stock and fortunately we’ve had plenty of it. The middle market is still solid, but we’re just entering Book 3 tomorrow, so that will be more determined in the coming days.”
