Break Water Edison was purchased by Off the Hook for $150,000 at last year's Keeneland September Sale, and flourished under the care of principals Joe Appelbaum and Carlos Morales. The colt was sent through the OBSMAR sale, and put buyers on notice with a snappy :10 1/5 breeze (video). The work caught the eye of trainer John Kimmel, who saw off all challengers to land the big bay for $525,000 on behalf of Eli Gindi, a new owner involved in the real estate market. “Well, there wasn't much not to like,” Kimmel said at the time. “Physically, he has tremendous balance, scope, a great walk, and good bone to him. He looked good on the racetrack. He's as good on his physical parameters–x-rays, scoping–as anything I've had. He reminds me of a horse like Premium Tap. And Lemon Drop Kid is coming around as a sire.” Named Break Water Edison, the colt opened up at 6-5 odds for his debut in this, but drifted up to 2-1 by post time. Ridden hard from post three to take a narrow lead, he battled a rival into submission rounding the turn, opened a clear lead under a vigorous hand ride, then was geared down in the final stages under Alan Garcia to win by 4 3/4 lengths. Precursor (A.P. Indy) was second best, with 57-1 bomb Western Legend (El Corredor) rallying for show honors. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $31,200.
