Chasing Yesterday (Tapit), a half-sister to none other than Triple Crown winner American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile), Horse of the Year, Ch. 2yo & 3yo Colt, MGISW, $8,650,300, took all the tote attention down to 1-5 and ran to the money and her regal pedigree to be named a ‘TDN Rising Star’. Chasing speedy fellow firster Honeyfromthesouth (Fed Biz) through splits of :21.88 and :45.34, she always looked to have that foe’s measure as she ranged up to take over heading for home. Never really asked for her best, the chestnut cruised home 4 1/4 lengths to the good in 1:04.44. There was a 7 1/4-length gap back to the third finisher.
Chasing Yesterday’s half-sister American Cleopatra (Pioneerof the Nile) debuted a winner almost exactly two years ago here to much less pre-race fanfare as a 7-1 shot for trainer Bob Baffert and Zayat Stables. Named a ‘Rising Star‘ herself, she was second in that year’s GI Del Mar Debutante S. next out before eventually RNA’ing for $1.9 million at last year’s Fasig-Tipton November sale.
Jane Lyon’s Summer Wind purchased Chasing Yesterday’s dam Littleprincessemma for $2.1 million in foal to Pioneerof the Nile at the 2014 FTKNOV sale. The resulting colt was Irish stakes-placed St Patrick’s Day. The 2016 Broodmare of the Year has a yearling colt named Theprinceofthebes (Pioneerof the Nile) and a son of Tapit foaled Feb. 27. She was bred back to that Gainesway stalwart this season. Click here for a recent TDN Weekend feature on Jane Lyon’s Summer Wind Farm.
