Chief Istan, a flashy runaway front-running debut winner over four rivals going five furlongs at Delaware last September, was ready to roll in his first attempt off the bench. The bay tuned up with a five-furlong move in :59 3/5 at Fair Grounds Mar. 27 and a four-furlong breeze in :48 1/5 at Keeneland Apr. 12, and was sent off at odds of 9-2 in his sophomore debut here. Drawn widest of all in post nine, Chief Istan battled on the outside through an opening quarter in :22.41. He began to shake clear on the far turn, headed for home with a decisive advantage as rider Kerwin Clark took a quick look in the rearview mirror, and dropped the hammer in the stretch after some left-handed encouragement to score by 8 3/4 lengths. Harvey (Curlin), a sharp maiden winner at Fair Grounds with an 89 Beyer Speed Figure Mar. 21, was second. The winner is the first foal from the unraced dam My Indian. The 7-year-old produced a filly by Haynesfield in 2013 and a colt by Desert Party in 2014. My Indian is a half-sister to GII Prairie Meadows Cornhusker BC H. winner Siphon City (Siphon {Brz}). Sales history: $15,000 RNA yrl '13 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 2-2-0-0, $54,000.
