Coolmore's freshman sire Corniche (by Quality Road) picked up his second winner and first 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard' Tuesday when his daughter Fanshell Beach ran down the well-backed War Ready (Jackie's Warrior) at Churchill Downs, graduating by open lengths in this 4 1/2-furlong maiden special weight event.
Drawn widest of the six, the 7-5 second choice missed a clean jump and had to work to keep up with even-money favorite War Ready who shot out to the early advantage into the far turn. That pair quickly opened up a sizable gap back to the rest of the field as the first quarter went in :22.29 with Fanshell Beach pressuring her rival every step. As War Ready began to shorten stride at the furlong marker, Fanshell Beach kept on, winning for fun and putting 5 1/2 lengths back to second through the final sixteenth under a confident ride from Hall of Famer John Velazquez.
Booked (Yaupon) was able to run down stablemate War Ready for second.
Trainer Wesley Ward, already with 12 Royal Ascot winners to his name, will look to add to that total this June as he confirmed to the TDN that Fanshell Beach will target the six-furlong G3 Albany Stakes for her next start on June 19.
A champion juvenile himself, Corniche now has two winners from as many starters with Fanshell Beach joining the Wesley Ward bred and owned Suspicions who won on opening day at the Keeneland Spring Meet Apr. 3. An $80,000 Keeneland September Yearling grad for Hat Creek Racing, this filly is a daughter of MSW Pacific Heat who earned more than $380,000 on the track and now has four winners from five to race. Her most recent offspring is a yearling filly by Oscar Performance.
