Fashion Alert, looking to become the first Todd Pletcher firster to take a stakes race since Sensational Slam (Grand Slam) won the 2010 Clarendon S. at Woodbine, was pushed along for speed by pilot John Velazquez from the outside gate. Putting a head in front three deep midway on the turn after a :22.37 opening quarter, the bay began to edge away from Lindy at the head of the lane as far-back Liatris started to mount a bid. Liatris continued to gain ground in the stretch, but nobody was catching Fashion Alert, and she kept on straight and strong along the rail to win like a good thing. “I thought she did everything we hoped she would do,” offered Pletcher, who had unveiled just two other newcomers in stakes races over the past five years, according to DRF Formulator. “She got away pretty alertly and put herself in good position. It was an advantage to have the outside post, which we were happy about when the draw came out. She's a very talented filly that ran to her training. I think timing-wise, this sets her up very well for the [GIII] Schuylerville [S. July 18 at Saratoga].” The winner's dam, who is a half to Grade II winner Big Band Sound (Bernstein), was purchased by Katsumi Yoshida for $575,000 in foal to Regal Ransom at last year's Fasig-Tipton February sale. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $60,000.
