Richard Baltas-trained sophomore Fibonacci (Artie Schiller) impressed for the second straight time Friday going nine panels over the Santa Anita sod, stamping himself a ‘TDN Rising Star’. A $20,000 Fasig-Tipton July yearling, the grey was fourth as the favorite in his Del Mar debut Sept. 3, and resurfaced to finish second by a neck with some traffic trouble here over a mile again Jan. 28. He’d been campaigned by agents Solis and Litt up to that point, but then they let everyone in, including major client LNJ Foxwoods, Reiley Racing Stables LLC, David Meah and Baltas himself. Fibonacci rewarded those new investors with a visually impressive 3 1/2-length tally over course and distance Feb. 24, and he was backed down to 3-5 to double up. Settling into a midpack position one off the fence early, the chalk grabbed a pocket spot down the backside behind splits of :46.54 and 1:10.61. He squeezed his way past a tiring rival and into second heading for home and grabbed the lead before they hit the straight. Fibonacci leveled off beautifully from there, and ran up the score to 6 1/4 promising lengths at the wire. East Rand (Denman {Aus}) completed the exacta. The winner is out of an unraced Bernardini daughter of Real Cozzy (Cozzene), who annexed the 2001 GII Fair Grounds Oaks and was second in the GI Kentucky Oaks and GI Mother Goose S. His dam produced a Munnings filly last year and was bred back to Shanghai Bobby. He hails the female family of GI Kentucky Derby winner Real Quiet (Quiet American).
