With softened track conditions initiating a slew of withdrawals at Ascot, including that of Godolphin’s 850,000gns Tattersalls’ Craven Breeze-Up sale topper Divine Spirit (GB) (Kingman {GB}), Saeed bin Suroor trainee Final Song (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) filled that void–and how–with a blistering performance to earn ‘TDN Rising Star’ status at the first attempt in the card’s opening maiden. The 5-2 chance was slick from the traps and wrested immediate control from her rivals. In command throughout, she was allowed an inch of rein inside the quarter-mile marker and powered clear once shaken up approaching the final furlong to easily outclass Mrs Flanders (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) by an impressive five lengths. “It was a small field, but she was very professional and [trainer] Saeed [bin Suroor] was very positive beforehand,†said winning passenger Oisin Murphy. “She’s a beautifully bred filly, she finished full of running and it looks like she’s got a big engine. Let’s hope she stays in one piece as she’s got an exciting future.†Trainer Saeed bin Suroor is inclined to target Royal Ascot’s G3 Albany S. over six furlongs, rather than sticking to five for the G2 Queen Mary S., and added, “She’s always worked well in the morning and has shown plenty of class at home. This was her first day out and we had a question mark about the ground, as it was soft, but she handled it well and showed a good turn of foot. I think she wants six furlongs and nice ground. We’re thinking Royal Ascot and I think it will be the Albany.†Final Song is the latest foal and seventh winner out of G1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches third Rahiyah (Rahy) and the homebred bay is a half to G3 Prix La Rochette runner-up Decathlete (Medaglia d’Oro) and Listed Prix Montenica runner-up Drummore (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). Rahiyah’s second dam is G1 Coronation S. heroine Golden Opinion (Slew o’ Gold), herself a daughter of MGSW G2 Nassau S. victress Optimistic Lass (Mr. Prospector).
