Goldencents, who posted a series of strong five-furlong works in the lead-up to this unveiling, took the majority of the public's money and ran to his 8-5 odds. Breaking from the two hole under Kevin Krigger, the $62,000 OBSJUN graduate was ridden for speed and was soon in front through splits of :22.83 and :46.15. As the rest of the field fanned out five wide into the stretch, he unleashed a blistering turn of foot to open up by seven lengths and sailed home clear by 7 1/4 lengths. The final time of the race was a tick off Del Mar's 5 1/2-furlong track record. Fellow firster Wild Dude (Wildcat Heir) completed the exacta. Goldencents is the fifth winner for his freshman sire (by Harlan's Holiday). A $5,500 FTKOCT yearling, Goldencents was purchased by Dennis O'Neill–better known as the man who bought I'll Have Another (Flower Alley)–for $62,000 at OBSJUN after working a quarter in :21 1/5. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $42,000.
