Kandahar Run, a bargain 50,000gns TATOCT yearling, stepped up off a debut runner-up finish at Sandown Aug. 16 when graduating at Doncaster Sept. 12. Sent off the 9-4 second choice here off that effort, the grey stalked the pace set by Ghetto (GB) (Auction House {GB}) under cover throughout the early stages before moving out to challenge inside the final three furlongs. He mastered that rival at the quarter pole and stretched clear, despite veering right, to record an emphatic 3 1/2-length success. “He's a slow learner, but he's got a lot of ability and I like him,” trainer Henry Cecil commented. “He's very honest and is just a very big baby and didn't have a race there–he was just looking around when he went clear. There is a lot more improvement in him, and I wouldn't swap him for too many at the moment. He is in the Derby, but there is a long way to go before that. He'll definitely get a mile and a quarter, but after that we don't know.” Kandahar Run is a 3/4-brother to Grey Lilas (Ire) (Danehill), G1SW-Fr, $553,665; and a half to Stendahl (Ire) (Polish Precedent), SP-Fr, $171,611. Lifetime Record: 3-2-1-0, £17,173.
