Mi Suerte gained ‘TDN Rising Star’ status with this as-she-pleased debut score in a one-mile Hanshin newcomers’ test. Racing midpack for a few strides out of the gate, the dark bay quickly worked her way up to sit within striking range, about five lengths off the lead, and off the fence heading into the turn. Finding daylight ahead of her when they straightened, the 3-10 favourite performed as her pedigree suggested she should, sweeping past her overmatched rivals in a matter of strides under a motionless Yuga Kawada and running out a two-length winner under wraps from Derma Koiuta (Jpn) (Deep Brillante {Jpn}).

The winner is the third foal out of Mi Sueno, the winner of the GI Del Mar Debutante and GIII Sorrento S. purchased by Katsumi Yoshida for $1.9-million at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale in 2013. Mi Sueno, who had previously been bought by Southern Equine Stables for $1.7-million at Keeneland November in 2007, is a daughter of GI Ashland S. victress Madcap Escapade, who was also third in the GI Kentucky Oaks. Madcap Escapade is herself a half-sister to Dubai Escapade (Awesome Again), winner of the GI Ballerina Breeders’ Cup S. They are out of the minor stakes-winning Sassy Pants. Mi Sueno’s first Japanese-conceived progeny is a yearling filly by Heart’s Cry (Jpn).
