Acquired in utero for 850,000gns at the Tattersalls December sale, Monastic Springs had posted pedestrian workouts at Colts Neck Stable down in New Jersey, but showed a solid turn of foot after an eventful trip in his career opener. Let go at 12-1, the bay was jostled at the start and raced in traffic down the backstretch. Jockey Edgar Prado had his hands full as he rated the colt off the pace, and had to steady off heels on the far turn and again at the top of the lane. Looking for running room, Prado took aim at an opening between horses, but bumped with Bob's Star (Storm Cat) en route to the hole, forcing him into the rivals on his outside. Unperturbed by the chain reaction, Monastic Springs accelerated once in the clear and caught He Struck It Rich (Seeking the Gold) in the final strides for a neck score. The stewards took a look at the tape, but allowed the original order of finish to stand. Ipi Tombe has an unraced two-year-old filly by Pivotal (GB) named Pin Turn (GB), and was bred to Giant's Causeway in 2008. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $31,200.
