Though lacking experience for her racecourse debut, Nannina overcame that greenness to record an impressive victory at rewarding odds of 11-2. In doing so, she provided her freshman sire (by Machiavellian) with his third individual winner. The bay filly endeavored to hang right upon exiting the gate, but received encouraging slaps down the neck to join the field in 10th and was pushed along to remain in contention at halfway. A transformed proposition once into the home straight, the homebred went through the gears–without recourse to the persuader–ascending Pontefract's notorious climb and accelerated into fifth at the furlong marker. She lengthened in smooth fashion to lead with 50 yards to go, coasting to the wire from there to deny the enterprisingly ridden Crimson (Ire) (Fasliyev), and was value for much more than the three-length winning margin. “That's [Medicean]'s third winner and now the summer's here, with the faster ground, they're picking up and coming to the fore,” explained Cheveley Park Stud's John Marsh, adding, “I would like to think [Nannina] would get a mile. Her mum won the [G3] Criterion S. and [Listed] Sceptre S. over seven [furlongs] and, as her sire got a mile and a quarter, although preferably a miler, she'll get a little further and fingers are crossed.” Likely options may include the G3 Princess Margaret S. at Newbury July 23, the G3 Sweet Solera S. at Newmarket Aug. 6 or the G2 Lowther S. at York Aug. 18. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, £4,953.
