One Lucky Dane, the most expensive of his freshman sire (by Smart Strike)'s 54 yearlings to sell at public auction in 2013, broke through with a 9 1/2-length tour-de-force going two turns on dirt for the first time Saturday afternoon at Santa Anita. The bay was no better than an 11-1 gamble in his six-furlong debut Aug. 9, but acquitted himself well in finishing a distant third behind a freakish performance from Om (Munnings), with subsequent MGISW American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) two spots behind in fifth and subsequent Oak Tree Juvenile Turf S. hero Daddy D T (Scat Daddy) sixth. He was favored at 3-2 to celebrate graduation day last time out when trying a mile for the first time at Del Mar Aug. 30, but he endured a wide run into the first turn after drawing widest in that field of 10 and dueled gamely to the finish, but dropped a half-length decision to well-meant firster Conquest Hiosilver (Majesticperfection). Pounded into 7-10 favoritism while transitioning to the dirt, One Lucky Dane was under a gun ride from Rafael Bejarano to get to the front and accomplished that mission entering the clubhouse turn. He was firmly in command from there, cutting out fractions of :46.30 to the half and 1:10.67 for six panels before finishing out the mile strongly. The winner is a half-brother to Grade III-winning juvenile Western Smoke (Smoke Glacken), GSW, $267,472; and A Shin Harbor (Cozzene), GSP-Jpn, $1,034,561. Woodford Thoroughbreds acquired Echo Harbor for $245,000 in foal to Mr. Greeley at the 2010 Keeneland November sale. She is the dam of a yearling colt by Hard Spun and was bred to Paynter in the current breeding season. Lifetime Record: 3-1-1-1, $57,600.
