Pariah lived up to the promise he displayed in a pair of strong trials earlier this month to win Rosehill’s G3 Canonbury S. on debut on Saturday, besting a strong field in the process and earning ‘TDN Rising Star’ status. Taken back to sit four lengths off the speed by Kerrin McEvoy, the bay was forced four-wide off the bend. That proved but a minor inconvenience as he worked his way to the lead under a handride. McEvoy never had to resort to the stick as Pariah hit the line a length to the better of the fast-finishing favourite Menari. Menari’s performance is well worth noting; boxed in on the fence at the top of the stretch as Pariah was winding up on the outside, Menari had to take back to near last to get out for running room, and came roaring down the middle of the track in the final 100 metres. The third-place finisher, Malahat, is the first foal out of dual Group 3 winner Raspberries, while fourth-placed Showtime is a A$1.1-million full-brother to Group 1 winner Sweet Idea (Aus) who is campaigned by a partnership including Arrowfield, Katsumi Yoshida and Koundouris Bloodstock. Spendthrift’s fifth-placed Haulalai is a A$625,000 son of Group 1 winner Aloha (Aus) (Encosta de Lago {Aus}). Pariah, a A$700,000 graduate of last year’s Inglis Easter sale, races the same James Harron-managed partnership that campaigned last year’s G1 Golden Slipper winner and ‘TDN Rising Star’ Capitalist (Aus) (Written Tycoon {Aus}), with Inglis Deputy Chairman Arthur Inglis and family also involved. The partnership, along with trainers Peter and Paul Snowden, look set for an exciting autumn as they have another ‘TDN Rising Star’ in their arsenal: the Listed Breeders’ Plate winner Khan (Aus) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}), who posted a promising trial second on Friday. “He’s a great-natured colt who has really matured into a beautiful horse and absolutely, things look good for him moving forward,†Harron said. “When we saw him at Easter last year he had a lot of quality about him; was very masculine and he had a lovely shape, a really nice medium-sized horse, not too big and definitely not too small. Add to that his terrific pedigree and we were confident we were on a winner and, well, it’s off to a nice start.†Peter Snowden indicated after the race that Pariah could be prepared for the G1 Blue Diamond S. on Feb. 25. Pariah is the first foal for the dual metropolitan winner Secluded who, being a daughter of the stakes-winning Cloister, is a full-sister to dual Group 1 winner Melito (Aus). Another of her sisters has produced the G1 Australian Guineas-second You’re So Good (NZ) (Savabeel {Aus}), while Pariah’s Group 3-winning third dam is a half to G1 Blue Diamond S. winner and sire Zeditave (Aus) (The Judge {Aus}). South African champion and sire Greys Inn (Zabeel {NZ}) appears under the fourth dam. Secluded’s second foal, a full-brother to Pariah, will be offered by Arrowfield at this year’s Inglis Easter sale as lot 333. Saturday’s Rosehill card proved a fruitful one for Arrowfield and its sires, with the Arrowfield-owned Teaspoon (Aus), a daughter of Redoute’s Choice’s son Snitzel (Aus), extending her unbeaten record to two with a half-length score in the G3 Widden S. for trainer Michael Freedman.
